MARKÁDIA was inaugurated in January 1987, based on the idea of creating good quality tourist facilities triggered by the attracting and stunning natural and cultural heritage of the Alentejo. At the time touristic developments were practically inexistent in this part of the country and thus it took courage and determination to start this pioneering project called Markádia. We developed the campsite and the apartments; the restaurants, the small supermarket and we provided the first swimming pool in the vicinity, the first tennis courts and the first to facilitate the navigation on the lake in canoes and peddleboats. We have promoted our place in the Alentejo ever since, attracting domestic and foreign tourists by convincing them to enjoy this paradisiacal place with the aim of sharing and preserving it, meant to appeal to the guest who loves nature, quietude and the relaxing atmosphere of the Alentejo. Finally, but very satisfied, twenty years later, in 2007 the Lake of Odivelas and its environs, including Markádia, was declared a protected area, by the National Council of Ministers, and proclaimed to be a National Ecological Reserve.
